Experiment 7 — IPv4/IPv6, Static Routing, RIP and OSPF
Manual pages: 68–73 | Tool: Cisco Packet Tracer
AIM
To practise IPv4 and IPv6 addressing/subnetting and configure static and dynamic routing (RIP and OSPF).
TOPOLOGY
PC0/PC1 --- Switch0 --- R0 (G0/0:192.168.1.1)
|
G0/1:10.0.0.1/30
|
G0/1:10.0.0.2/30
|
PC2/PC3 --- Switch1 --- R1 (G0/0:192.168.2.1)
Manual difference: The manual connects R0–R1 using serial s0/0/0 with clock rate 64000 on DCE. This kit provides your practised Ethernet alternative (g0/1). Verify actual cabling (e.g., show cdp neighbors): if R1 inter-router link is G0/0 and its LAN is G0/1, swap R1 port commands accordingly.
EXECUTION STEPS — STATIC ROUTING
- Place 2 routers, 2 switches, 4 PCs. Connect PCs↔switches↔routers and routers↔routers (Ethernet in this adaptation).
- Router0 CLI: Router0_Static.cli; Router1 CLI: Router1_Static.cli.
- Set PC0
192.168.1.2/24GW192.168.1.1; PC1192.168.1.3/24GW same; PC2192.168.2.2/24GW192.168.2.1; PC3192.168.2.3/24GW same. - Verify on both routers
show ip interface brief→ up/up. Router0 CLIping 10.0.0.2→ success. Then PC0 ping192.168.2.2→ success. show ip routeshowsSfor a static route to other LAN.
EXECUTION STEPS — RIP V2 (separate routing method)
- Preserve a separate Packet Tracer copy first, e.g.
RIP.pkt. - Router0: Router0_RIP.cli; Router1: Router1_RIP.cli.
- Static routes are removed in these scripts. Wait for convergence;
show ip routeremote networks should showR; PC0 ping PC2.
EXECUTION STEPS — OSPF (separate routing method)
- Save a separate copy
OSPF.pktbased on the RIP setup. - Router0: Router0_OSPF.cli; Router1: Router1_OSPF.cli.
- RIP is removed; OSPF advertises LAN + inter-router
/30networks in area 0. Wait for adjacency;show ip routeremote LAN showsO.
EXECUTION STEPS — IPv6 (separate addressing test)
- On both routers enable
ipv6 unicast-routing, assign interface IPv6 addresses and cross-network IPv6 routes as given in IPv6_Commands.cli. - Configure PC0 and PC2 IPv6 addresses/default gateways. Ping PC2 IPv6
2001:DB8:2::2from PC0. - Additional IPv6 static routes here complete the manual's minimal IPv6 section, which lists only LAN IPv6 addresses and not an inter-router IPv6 route.
EXPECTED OUTPUT
S 192.168.2.0/24 via 10.0.0.2 (static on R0)
R 192.168.2.0/24 via 10.0.0.2 (after RIP)
O 192.168.2.0/24 via 10.0.0.2 (after OSPF)
PC0 ping 192.168.2.2: Reply ...
Only one route type is expected for a given routing configuration; do not claim S/R/O simultaneously. See sample file.
RESULT
Thus, IPv4/IPv6 addressing and static, RIP and OSPF routing were configured and tested successfully using Cisco Packet Tracer.
VIVA
- Static routes are manually configured; RIP uses distance-vector hop count; OSPF is link-state.
